On 30 November 2015, TIPH attended a rally organised by the Governor’s Office on the occasion of the UN campaign on ending violence against women. The rally took place in Ibn Rushd Square in Hebron and some 70 women and men from a wide variety of local organisations participated. Among the speakers were Governor Kamel Hamaid and Director of Women’s and Children’s Affairs Safaa Abu Sneineh, both urging for cooperation and action in working on Women’s Rights. At the end of the event, orange balloons were released into the sky, as a symbol of the campaign.
– Gender is one of TIPHs strategic priorities and a vital part of the activities carried out by the mission and it is important that we also show our support of these types of initiatives in Hebron. In our reports we ensure that the gender-perspective is always considered and through our Community Relations projects, we support local organisations and authorities in projects such as promoting the security of women, or projects for boys with the aim of reducing their involvement in the conflict, says Head of Mission Geir Holmenes.
In 2013, a new TIPH gender mainstreaming strategy was approved by the Capitals’ Meeting and this document provides a solid framework for continued gender awareness within TIPH. TIPHs Gender Adviser is the one in charge of ensuring that a gender perspective is integrated in all aspects of TIPH’s work, including operations, research and analysis, legal and liaison work.
– Internally, I support the mission with in-depth knowledge on gender and culture-relevant aspects. It is important that all mission members are aware of local customs and are familiarised with the cultural framework in which they work. I also design, implement and follow-up on projects together with Community Relation Officers and carry out outreach work involving local NGOs and international organisations, as well as with the local authorities, says TIPH Gender Adviser Gunhild Bigset.
