On Saturday 10 October, the Legal Awareness Campaign will be launched. The aim of the campaign is to inform the Palestinians of Hebron of their fundamental rights.

The Campaign is a joint venture between the Hebron Office of the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR), the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee (HRC), the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) and a group of young lawyers (the Committee for Activating the International Mechanisms for Protecting Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, DIFAA) who have specialized in the United Nations (UN) Special Procedures.

The Campaign is facilitated by the Temporary International Presence in the City of Hebron (TIPH). ‘We wanted to provide a platform for both Israeli and Palestinian Organisations to inform the population of Hebron of their fundamental rights under International, Israeli and Palestinian Legislation’ says the TIPH Head of Mission (HoM), Brigadier General Britt T.B. Brestrup.

The Campaign is of a comprehensive nature. It includes information about fundamental rights under International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law as well as avenues to pursue if your rights have been violated by the Israeli or the Palestinian Authorities. It also includes information on how to complain to the UN Special Rapporteurs.

The Campaign consists of three pillars: a radio campaign, an information brochure, and a number of workshops. The brochure consists of contributions from the above mentioned partner organizations who are responsible for the content. Representatives from these organisations will also lecture during the workshops.

The workshops focus both on people in the Palestinian controlled (H1) area and the Israeli controlled (H2) part of Hebron. The following groups will be targeted: students, women, lawyers, civil society and people in the Old Souq. The schedule for the workshops can be found at the TIPH website (see below).

The campaign aims at being pragmatic with Question and Answer sessions during all the workshops and concrete information about where to file a complaint to the Palestinian and the Israeli Authorities, how to file a complaint, phone numbers to the Authorities as well as to Human Rights Organisations that can assist.
