A few dates and a glass of water is the traditional way of breaking the fast at Iftar (the daily meal after sunset when it is allowed to eat and drink). To start the Iftar with dates is important in the Islamic religion since the habit also was practised by the prophet Muhammed.

Dates are a good source of dietary fibres; they are also rich in iron, potassium, and other minerals and vitamins.
