TIPH commemorates the death of two observers in 2002

On 26 March 2016, TIPH members commemorated the death of two colleagues who were killed in the service of peace 14 years ago.

In the morning, TIPH Head of Mission accompanied by the Senior National Representatives from the six contributing countries visited the location of the tragedy for a moment of commemoration and reflection.

The ceremony, taking place in the TIPH headquarters, was attended by TIPH members and representatives from the Turkish Consulate General in Jerusalem.

TIPH Head of Mission Einar Johnsen spoke of the importance of remembering the risk related to TIPH’s important work and mandate.

– This is a tragic incident that will never be forgotten within the TIPH or within the six contributing countries. Our thoughts are today with the friends and families of Catherine and Cengiz.

Ms. Catherine Berruex from Switzerland and Mr. Turgut Cengiz Toytunç from Turkey were shot and killed on Bypass Road 35 just outside Hebron on 26 March 2002. Mr. Hüseyin Ozarslan from Turkey was injured but survived the attack. TIPH and the six contributing countries Denmark, Norway, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey extend their thoughts to the families and friends of the victims.
