26 March marks the 9th anniversary of the killing of two TIPH observers — Catherine Berruex from Switzerland and Deputy Head of Operations Turgut Cengiz Toytunç from Turkey. To honour the memory of the fallen colleagues, the TIPH performed a ceremony, lead by TIPH Head of Mission, Brigadier General Einar Johnsen.

— Catherine Berruex and Turgut Cengiz Toytunç were victims in the service of peace. We remember them as good friends and skilled professionals. Their sacrifice reminds us of what is at stake, and they will never be forgotten, said Brigadier General Johnson at the solemn ceremony at the TIPH Headquarters in Hebron.

The senior national representatives of the Swiss and Turkish contingents perfomed speeches in memory of their compatriots:

— We pass these memorial stones every day, but today we stop for a minute to pay tribute to people like us, who came here to work for peace and for the people of Hebron, said Andreas Schweizer from Switzerland.

— Today is a day of rememberance. Our friends and colleagues were killed, despite the fact they came here to work for peace, said Sabri Dilmaç from Turkey.

Earlier, a short ceremony, attended by the TIPH senior staff, was held at the place of the tragedy, at Bypass Road 35 just outside the city limits.

The two observers were killed by an armed gunman on the evening of 26 March 2002.
