On Sunday 12 April 2009 TIPH celebrated the groundbreaking of a three-storey sport and culture centre in Tareq Ben Ziad area in the West Bank city of Hebron. TIPH is contributing up to 350 000 USD into this construction.

TIPH Head of Mission, the Mayor of Hebron, Deputy Governor and officials and representatives from various Palestinian organizations, charities and families attended the event.

The sport and culture centre will be built in Tareq Ben Ziad area in H2, one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city. Thousands of Palestinian youngsters live in this area, deprived of such sport and cultural complex.

It is a great day for our partnership with the Hebron Municipality, and a great day for the population of Tareq ben Ziad. In 9 to 12 months, this centre will open its doors for sports and cultural activities, TIPH Head of Mission Roy C Grottheim says.

The sport and culture centre is so far the ever biggest project in the past twelve years of TIPH in the city.

Since March 2008 TIPH consulted the Tareq Ben Ziad Sport Club, mukhtars, charities and organizations to design this building and specify its use, in partnership with the Hebron Municipality. In addition to its main role as an observer mission, TIPH contributes efforts towards the restoration of normal life in the city, by supporting various projects of which this centre is one, says Deputy Head of Research, Analysis and Information division, Philippe Puyo.
