Hebron 04.11.2006: During the holy month of Ramadan, TIPH sponsored several bakeries in the Old City Market in Hebron. Over 25 000 kilos of flour was bought and handed out to bakeries allowing them to sell traditional Ramadan sweets and bread at half price.

– People really came to the old city to shop this year, a Palestinian Municipality Inspector told TIPH after Eid al-Fitr.

Sponsoring the bakeries in the Old Souq of Hebron during Ramadan is one way that TIPH works to encourage all Hebron citizens to visit the Old City and its markets. During Ramadan TIPH was present with several patrols to provide a feeling of security and to monitor the situation.

A Palestinian resident of Hebron said, during an interview in the old city, that he went to visit the old city of Hebron and he noticed the presence of the observers from TIPH especially near the Israeli checkpoints.

– I think TIPH is working very hard to encourage the Palestinian citizens to visit their old city and to make their shopping from its old stores and markets in order to preserve it and to protect it, he told the local radio station Radio Marah.

The project resulted in sweets and bread being sold at half price during Ramadan. The distribution of the flour was conducted in cooperation with Hebron Rehabilitation Committee.

In addition, on the 30th of September, the TIPH sponsored one meal distributed by the Ibrahimi Soup Kitchen, as a gift to the population in the Old City.
