On Monday 8 December 2014, TIPH Head of Mission Geir Holmenes attended the conference “Challenges facing women between customs, traditions and facing the occupation” at the Governor’s office in Hebron. One of the main topics was elimination of violence against women.

Several women’s organisations took part in workshops and gave lectures during the conference, sharing their experiences in the context of occupation and of local traditions and perceptions of women’s role in society. The Governor of Hebron, Mr. Kamiol Humayd, who has been very active in supporting initiatives targeting violence and abuse of women, gave an opening speech. Later, Maysoun Qawasmeh talked about the media’s role and responsibility, and Dr. Mariam Abu Turki gave a lecture about violence and women’s mental health. The Family Protection Unit of the Palestinian Civil Police also participated in the conference.

− Violence against women is a huge problem, not in any way restricted to this part of the world. Supporting women’s projects and reaching all segments of the population remains a priority to TIPH, and we find it very encouraging that the Governor is hosting this conference, so that the issue can be elucidated and thoroughly discussed, says TIPH Head of Mission Geir Holmenes.
