On Tuesday 1 March Hebron Municipality formally took over the Tariq Bin Ziad Sports Centre from the contractors.

The construction of the Centre, located in a poor area of down town H2, has been substantially financed by TIPH through reimbursed VAT funds. The process for obtaining equipment and furniture is under way, and is managed by the French NGO Fédération Sportive et Gymnique du Travail (FSGT). On Tuesday, representatives of the TIPH, the contractors, FSGT and the Municipality inspected the premises to formalise the handover.

The Centre will open in Mid-May, but a few young swimmers took the opportunity to test the 12.5 m swimming pool.

— I am convinced that the Tariq Bin Ziad Sports Centre will have a positive impact on the life in this neighbourhood. Our mandate states that one of our tasks is to enhance the well being of the Palestinians; kids diving in a wonderful swimming pool – that is an example of real well being, says TIPH Head of Mission Einar Johnsen.
