Temporary International Presence in the City of Hebron

TIPH is an international civilian observer mission. TIPH assists the parties in the normalization of the situation in the city and reports on their efforts and the breaches of the agreements on Hebron and international law. TIPH reports to the Palestinian and Israeli authorities and to the 6 member countries. 

 
 

Mustafa Barghouti gives lecture at TIPH

On Thursday 4th of February Palestinian medical doctor and democracy activist Mustafa Barghouti gave a lecture at TIPH headquarters for all TIPH members on health problems in the West Bank and Gaza.
 

TIPH holding introduction course for nineteen new mission members

On Monday 2nd of February 2010 Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) started an introduction course for incoming members. Nineteen new TIPH observers are attending the course, which will last until Wednesday 10th of February.
 

TIPH supports educational project for Palestinian children in Hebron

Saturday 16 January 2010, was the first day of a ten day long educational camp for Palestinian children in Hebron supported by Temporary International Presence in Hebron.
 

TIPH arranges lunch meeting for heads of commands

On Tuesday 19 January 2010, TIPH Head of Mission, Britt T. B. Brestrup, hosted the heads of commands of the Israeli Defense Forces and the Palestinian Security Forces in the city of Hebron for a lunch meeting at the TIPH headquarters.
The purpose of the lunch was to strengthen the good cooperation between TIPH and both parties as a part of the TIPH mandate.
The meeting was attended by representatives from both sides as well as senior TIPH staff.
 

TIPH thanks leaving local employee Salah Sider for his work

Temporary International Presence in Hebron thanks leaving local employee Salah Sider for his work with TIPH. Salah Sider started working with TIPH in January 2004. His main task was assisting Finance and Logistical Department of TIPH.

On Tuesday 16 June, TIPH staff organized a downtown tour for a high level delegation from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO).

On Tuesday 9th of June 2009, Temporary International Presence in Hebron arranged its annual neighborhood day at TIPH headquarter. Palestinians living nearby TIPH headquarter in Dahiyyet Al-Rame, were invited to meet the TIPH members, get more knowledge about TIPH and its work and take part in social and cultural activities.

Change of command in TIPH

Brigadier General Britt T. B. Brestrup is replacing Brigadier General Roy C. Grøttheim as Head of Mission for the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) on the 28th of April 2009. Mr. Roy C. Grøttheim leaves the mission as scheduled after serving one year and three months as Head of Mission.
 

TIPH celebrated the groundbreaking of sport and culture centre in Tareq Ben Ziad

On Sunday 12 April 2009 TIPH celebrated the groundbreaking of a three-storey sport and culture centre in Tareq Ben Ziad area in the West Bank city of Hebron. TIPH is contributing up to 350 000 USD into this construction.
 

Seven years since two TIPH observers were shot dead in Hebron

On 26th March 2009 TIPH commemorates the tragic deaths of two of its members. Seven years ago, Catherine Berruex from Switzerland and Turgut Cengiz Toytunç from Turkey were shot and killed on Bypass Road 35 just outside Hebron.
 

TIPH signs agreement on sport center in Tareq Ben Ziad

Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) Tuesday 27 January 2009 signed an agreement with the Hebron Municipality on establishing a multipurpose culture and sports center in the West Bank city of Hebron. The project is the biggest so far in the history of TIPH.
 

TIPH worried about increased use of force by the Israeli Army

A 17 year old boy was shot dead by the Israeli Army Friday afternoon in the West Bank city of Hebron. The boy was hit in connection with a demonstration organized by Hamas in H2 against the war in Gaza.
 

Settler violence after evacuation of Occupied House

Under heavy teargas and stun grenade fire the Israeli Army and Police evicted the settlers from the Occupied House in al-Ras/Patriarchs’ Hill in Hebron on Thursday 4 December.
The evacuation started around two o’clock in the afternoon and was over after one hour.
-We welcome this step taken by the Israeli authorities. The operation was handled efficiently by the army and police and the resistance from the settlers inside seems to have been limited, says TIPH Head of Mission, Brigadier General Roy C. Grottheim.
 

Head of TIPH met with Palestinian Prime Minister

Head of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH), Roy C Grottheim, met on Saturday 13 of September with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad to discuss the recent political development and security situation in the West Bank city of Hebron. The meeting took place in Hebron Governor Hussein Al-Araj's office.
 

TIPH distributes free flour to bakeries during Ramadan

For the third year in a row Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) is distributing free flour to a number of bakeries and pastries in the Old Souq during Ramadan. The flour is used for traditional Ramadan sweets and bread, which then are sold at almost half price.
 

TIPH concerned over announced expansion of Israeli settlement

The Temporary International Presence in Hebron is concerned about the consequences of the announced authorized expansion of the Beit Romano settlement in the center of Hebron’s old city.
 

Norwegian Minister in Hebron

The Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jonas Gahr Støre, visited the Temporary International Presence in Hebron on 27 June 2008. He was briefed by the observers and was given an extended tour of the down town area of the city.
 

TIPH Head of Mission meets with Palestinian President

An important part of TIPH work involves meetings on different levels to make the situation in Hebron known. The Head of Mission meets with stakeholders to raise awareness and discuss solutions. Recently TIPH Head of Mission met the Palestinian President.

The Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) opens a new toll free phone line for people in Hebron to call when they want to report an incident. Through the 1-800 100 600 number there is always an Arabic speaking international observer available. (Hebron 15.01.2008)
 

Increased violence around newly occupied house in Hebron

TIPH reminds the Israeli authorities of the violence that has followed the occupation of the house on Patriarchs’ Hill / Al Ras in Hebron. In this respect TIPH again urges the Israeli authorities on all levels to take necessary measures to evict the occupants.
 

TIPH endorses UN Statement of Commitment on Eliminating Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

On 25 January 2008, the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) submitted a "Statement of Commitment on Eliminating Sexual Exploitation and Abuse by UN and Non-UN Personnel" to the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations in New York. The statement had been officially endorsed by Head of Mission Karl-Henrik Sjursen's in a signature ceremony in Hebron earlier.
 

Major campaign to raise legal awareness under occupation

The Temporary International Presence in Hebron conducts a major media campaign to raise awareness among the Palestinians regarding legal rights under occupation. During the campaign leaflets are handed out with information on procedures at the police, how to report crimes, how to appeal and what rights apply in occupied territory. TIPH also airs radio commercials during the period, encouraging people to use the legal system and stand up for the rights they have. The material is also made available on-line. TIPH releases opinion poll

The Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) commissioned Near East Consulting in Ramallah to conduct an opinion poll in Hebron. Over 800 persons were asked about their attitudes towards TIPH, their concerns and hopes for the future in the survey conducted by phone. (Hebron 21.12.2007)
