Temporary International Presence in the City of Hebron

The TIPH is an international civilian observer mission. The TIPH assists the parties in the normalisation of the situation in the city and reports on their efforts and the breaches of the agreements on Hebron and international law. TIPH reports to the Palestinian and Israeli authorities and to the six member countries.

The Italian member of the European Parliament and President of the Foundation of European Progressive Studies (FEPS), Massimo D’Alema, visited TIPH and Hebron on 3 February 2012.

Diplomatic Corps Visits TIPH

On 6 December, over 30 diplomats from diplomatic missions to Israel and to the Palestinian Authority followed an invitation from the Norwegian TIPH Coordinator to visit Hebron and TIPH.
 

Clowns entertaining Children

Family House – the café which is run by the Hebron Women Charitable Society – was filled with preschool children from a nearby kindergarten, when two clowns visited.
 

Fun Day for Children at Tel Rumeida

More than one hundred children attended a Fun day at the Tel Rumeida Association, arranged by TIPH and partner organisations. Clowns from Isaad Al-Tufule entertained both children and parents.

Member countries meeting in Hebron

The six member countries of TIPH convened in Hebron to discuss and coordinate the work of TIPH. The Capital meeting occurs twice a year, once in Hebron and once on a rotating schedule between the member countries.

Fun Day at the parking lot of Hebron Rehabilitation Committee.

A day just for fun was the message when TIPH and several of its partners invited all the children in the Old City to participate in a Fun Day at the parking lot of Hebron Rehabilitation Committee.
 

Subsidised Flour During Ramadan

Several tons of free flour are being distributed to bakeries and Qatayef sellers in the Old City of Hebron. —The purpose is to attract Hebronites to the Old City Center by selling bread and sweets at half price during the month of Ramadan, says TIPH Project Manager Omar Al-Samarai
 

TIPH Invited Hebronites for Iftar

To strengthen the relations with the local population TIPH continued the tradition of arranging Iftar for people in Hebron. This year over 400 guests attended.—I am very pleased that so many wanted to come, says Hallstein Laupsa, TIPH Community Relations Officer and coordinator for the Iftar.
 

TIPH Welcomes New Members

Nineteen new TIPH observers, from four different countries, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Italy, have now arrived in Hebron. After having completed an introduction course, they will be ready to start their new jobs.
 

TIPH Awards Young Photographers

Two hundred young Hebronites participated in a photo competition arranged by the TIPH, Hebron—France Association for Cultural Exchange, Partners for Sustainable Development, Al-Nukhba Model School and Hebron Rehabilation Committee. On Thursday evening, the winners were presented at a ceremony held at the Old City Museum.
 

Sports for Girls at TIPH-Sponsored Community Centre

During the month of July TIPH is supporting a series of summer camps for children in Hebron. One of the camps is for girls aged 6 to 12 in the newly opened Tariq Ibn Ziad Sport Centre in the Old City. The Center is partially funded by TIPH and run by Hebron Municipality.
 

TIPH Takes Part in HRC Jubilee

One of TIPH:s partners in Hebron, the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee, HRC, celebrated its 15th anniversary with a large conference on preserving historic city centres. TIPH was present as the conference opened with a festive ceremony on Tuesday.
 

TIPH Rewarded for Supporting the Weakest

On Monday, the TIPH received a memorial plaque from Al-Ihsan Charitable Society in Hebron. The organisation helps children with physical and mental disabilities, and TIPH has supported its activities for several years.
 

Workshop on Rights Attracts Hebron Women

On Thursday, TIPH arranged a well attended workshop at the Spanish Academy in downtown Hebron. Women from the Old City and Tel Rumeida – both parts of the H2 area, got an opportunity to discuss how to address grievances to the proper authorities. The workshop was organised in cooperation with the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
 

Cultural Evening in the Old City of Hebron

On 25 June, TIPH, in cooperation with Hebron-France Association and Hebron Rehabilitation Committee, arranged a cultural evening in the Old City.
 

TIPH Head of Mission visits Russian Monastery in Hebron

On Wednesday, the TIPH Head of Mission, Einar Johnsen, visited the Monastery of the Holy Patriarchs in Hebron, the only Christian site in the TIPH area of responsibility. The Head of Mission met with Hieromonk Aleksiy, who heads this Russian Orthodox Monastery. Father Aleksiy showed Mr. Johnsen the Monastery, and informed about its history and the Russian Church’s activities in Palestine throughout the ages.
 

TIPH Opens its Gates for Neighbourhood Day

On Thursday, TIPH made an effort to return some of the hospitality shown by the Hebronites, and opened the gates of the TIPH base for a neighbourhood day. Several hundreds of guests arrived, and were treated with theatre, games and a lot of children’s activities.
 

Tareq bin Ziad Community Centre Opened

The H2 Tariq bin Ziad area from this day boasts a sports centre with a world class wrestling hall, a swimming pool and several other facilities. TIPH has been partly funding the project, which has been run implemented jointly by the TIPH, the Hebron Municipality, the Tariq bin Ziad Sports Club and the French organisation Fédération Sportive et Gymnique du Travail.
 

Series of Workshops on Human Rights Concluded

TIPH, the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee and the Office of the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Human Rights issued on Tuesday a joint statement on a series of workshops, carried out during the two last months.
 

New Observers Complete Introduction Course

The latest group of TIPH observers completed on Monday their introduction course with a tour of Jerusalem, where the observers could learn about Jewish and Muslim traditions and claims of the region. The Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Temple Mount were visited, as well as other places of significance.
 

Medal Ceremony for Colleagues Leaving the Mission

On Thursday, TIPH held a farewell ceremony at the headquarters, where the Head of Mission, Einar Johnsen, awarded service medals to the 17 colleagues who leave the Mission.

Hebron Saleswomen Receive Diplomas

29 March TIPH Head of Mission, Einar Johnsen, handed out diplomas to 27 Hebron women who completed a business course, partially funded by the TIPH and arranged by the Hebron Chamber of Commerce.

A team from European organisations, among them the TIPH, was close to beating a Palestinian team, with players from the Palestinian Authority, in a friendship game on Saturday.
 

TIPH Commemorates Colleagues Who Gave Their Lives in the Line of Duty

26 March marks the 9th anniversary of the killing of two TIPH observers — Catherine Berruex from Switzerland and Deputy Head of Operations Turgut Cengiz Toytunç from Turkey. To honour the memory of the fallen colleagues, the TIPH performed a ceremony, lead by TIPH Head of Mission, Brigadier General Einar Johnsen.

Several Injured in Hebron Demos

Observers from the TIPH monitored closely the demonstrations in Hebron on Friday the 25th of February. The demonstrators demanded the down town al-Shuhada street, which is closed by for Palestinians for security reasons, to be reopened. In several places demonstrators clashed with Israeli and Palestinian security forces.

February 21st, the TIPH visited the Fahid al-Qawasma Schools for Boys, a primary school in Hebron, to inform the children about the TIPH mandate and its activities.
 

Spanish FM Met by Demonstrators in Hebron

A Spanish delegation, headed by the Spanish Foreign Minister, Mrs. Trinidad Jiménez García-Herrera, visited Hebron as a part of a two day visit to the region. The visit attracted a large amount of journalists and a handful of Jewish settler demonstrators, as Spain is supporting a housing project in down town Hebron. The demonstrators chanted slogans against the visit, but the demonstration was soon dispersed by Israeli Police.
 

New TIPH Observers Visit Downtown Hebron

Eleven new TIPH observers from the six contributing nations undergo currently an introduction course at the TIPH Head Quarters. The purpose of the course is to familiarise the new comers with TIPH’s mandate, its core activities and other relevant objects.

On 16 December 2010, the TIPH supported the first children ‘Marathon’ in Hebron together with the Al Nukhba Model School. More than 300 children ran a two km long ‘Marathon’, starting at Abu Mazen Restaurant and ending at Al Nukhba Model School.
